The Christmas season is here and here I am trying to find out how we as a society started celebrating Christmas, basically the roots of the festival and the way we celebrate it today. But before we dive into that I would like to start with etymology of the word Jesus Christ and some interesting esoteric symbolism in Christianity and then later in another blogpost cover the roots of Christmas, I think that will give greater context to both the topics.
The word Jesus is derived from the Latin word which is Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs), which is a Hellenized form of Jesus’s original name in ancient Palestinian Aramaic, which was יֵשׁוּעַ (Yēšūă‘), a shortened form of the earlier Hebrew name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yəhōšúaʿ), or 'Yeshua' (pronounced as “Yeh-shoo”)[Note how this is uncannily similar to 'eesu massiah', the name by which Jesus is referred to in India], same as Joshua in Old Testament), and means 'Yahweh is Salvation' or alternatively 'salvation' which later on gave the meaning 'messiah' to his name.
The word 'Christ' originates from the ancient Greek word χριστός (christós), meaning “one who has been anointed with oil.” This word is derived from the Greek verb χρίω (chríō), meaning “to anoint with oil.”
The word χριστός is formed from the root of the verb χρίω plus the standard verbal adjective suffix -τος (-tos). The verb χρίω is, in turn, derived from the Proto-Indo-European root word *gʰrey-, meaning “to smear.” The English word grime and the Sanskrit word घृ (ghṛ), meaning “to besprinkle,” are both linguistic derivations of χριστός derived from the same Proto-Indo-European root.
Interesting thing to note over here is that the ancient Greeks used Olive Oil extensively for a plethora of things. Hippocrates mentions 60 different conditions which could be treated with it, such as skin conditions, wounds & burns, gynaecological ailments, ear infections and many others. Another use was anointing, for them it was the most important oil and was one of the most basic difference maker between the rich and the poor (maybe even till date?). Anointing was usually done by pouring the oil over the head of the person in order to cleanse the person and make them holy and set apart for a specific holy purpose. Such consecrated oils were also known as 'Chrism' in ancient Greek.
FUN FACT: The winners of the Olympic Games were crowned with a wreath of the wild olive.
In short, etymologically it means, the anointed one who is the messiah or the anointed one via whom salvation will occur. But which salvation are they talking about here? From whom? And how will it happen? Before we figure out that answer (as per my opinion that is), let's see more stuff about Christianity and well our human body. - The brain in the human body produces cerebrospinal fluid, which after production travels along the spinal column.
- Jesus died at the age of 33, there are 33 vertebras in our spinal column.
- We have 12 cranial nerves and there were 12 disciples.
- Jesus was crucified in cavalry. Cavalry's etymology from Hebrew means 'place of the skull'
- Jacob's Ladder was a ladder which lead to heaven.
The cerebrospinal fluid is a thick fluid (oil like, if you think in terms of an allegory, the same way all sacred texts are spoken as) which during the life of a human, flows down from the brain to the spinal column. There is an interesting concept of Rebirth being mentioned in Bible. John 3:3 - Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
1 Peter 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
The rebirth or the resurrection is nothing but the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid from the end of the spinal column back to the brain. You can think of it as the fluid moving up the 33 vertebras (age of Jesus) and meeting the 12 cranial nerves (12 disciples) in the brain (cavalry meaning) and this whole process is the Jacob's Ladder! And when the fluid reaches the pineal gland in the brain, you are reborn!
FUN FACT: Pineal gland when activated (and not calcified, I will cover ways of how to de-calcify and then ways to activate it in another blogpost) produces small amounts of DMT!
Some more excerpts from the Bible supporting these thoughts.
- Corinthians 6:19 - "Your body is the temple and GOD is within you"
- Psalms 82:6 - "Ye are GODS, you are the children of the most high"
- John 10:34 - Yeshua answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I have said you are GODS'"
So this movement of the cerebrospinal fluid back up to the brain from the 33rd vertebrae is nothing but what is more popularly known as the Kundalini energy.
